Hien Quan Ball-Throwing Festival

The festival aims to commemorate and honor the contributions of female general Thiều Hoa Princess - Đức Thánh Mẫu Đại Vương, who assisted the Trưng Sisters in fighting invaders and saving the country. It is also an occasion for the people to recall the nation's tradition of nation-building and safeguarding, and to express the principle of 'drinking water, remembering the source' (gratitude).

The Hien Quan Phết Festival consists of four parts: a palanquin procession, ritual ceremonies, troop parade, and the "đánh phết" (playing with a wooden ball using a curved stick). Folk competitions are also held within the festival, such as rice cooking, making bánh dầy (round sticky rice cakes), and the "cướp phết" (scramble for the phết ball), which is the most exciting and intense part.

There are 6 Phết balls and 3 Chúi balls for festival participants to vie for; both are made from red-painted bamboo roots, with the Phết ball having a diameter of about 6–7 cm and the Chúi ball being smaller, around 4–5 cm. Locals believe that anyone who manages to get a Phết or Chúi ball, or even just touches one during this traditional Phú Thọ festival, will have good luck throughout the year.
